In western Madagascar, the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park contains an extraordinary labyrinth of limestone pinnacles, caves, canyons and narrow passages. The formations were created over immense periods of time as water gradually eroded the limestone, leaving behind thousands of sharp, towering formations. Seen from above, it resembles an enormous stone forest. Exploring it can involve suspension bridges, narrow walkways and carefully negotiated passages between the limestone pinnacles.

And beneath the extraordinary rock formations lies another world entirely.

Madagascar is famous for its unique wildlife, much of which exists nowhere else on Earth. Lemurs, chameleons and countless endemic species inhabit the surrounding forests. So Tsingy offers something particularly special: an extraordinary landscape combined with extraordinary wildlife.

Deep beneath New Zealand's North Island lies the Waitomo cave system, where thousands of tiny glowworms illuminate the darkness. The effect is extraordinary. As you travel quietly through the caves, the ceiling above appears to transform into a night sky, filled with tiny points of blue-green light.

There is no artificial lighting creating the spectacle. The glow comes from the creatures themselves.

The trees died hundreds of years ago when the river that once supplied the area changed course. They did not decompose because the extremely dry conditions prevented it. Instead, their blackened trunks remain standing.

The contrast is extraordinary. White earth. Black trees. Deep-blue sky. Towering orange dunes.

It is almost impossibly photogenic. The surrounding Sossusvlei region is one of Namibia's great natural treasures, and experiencing it at sunrise is particularly special, when the first light begins to illuminate the dunes and gradually changes their colour.

The surrounding national park is a remarkable combination of rainforest, limestone karst landscapes, coastal ecosystems and underground waterways.

Entering the cave by boat, the light from outside gradually disappears. Inside, enormous chambers open above you while stalactites and stalagmites have been shaped over thousands of years. The scale can be difficult to appreciate until you're actually inside.

Earth's Alien Landscape

Some landscapes look as though nature has turned up the saturation yet Dallol takes things considerably further.

Situated in Ethiopia's remote Danakil Depression, Dallol is one of the most extreme and surreal geological environments on Earth. Brilliant yellow sulphur deposits sit alongside pools of green, orange and red, while salt formations and volcanic activity create textures and colours that look almost artificial. The landscape has been created by an extraordinary combination of geological activity and hydrothermal processes.

It is difficult to look at photographs of Dallol without wondering whether you're actually looking at another planet.

Welcome to Lençóis Maranhenses.

Located in northeastern Brazil, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is one of those places that seems to have been designed specifically to challenge the imagination. Despite its appearance, this isn't a traditional desert. Seasonal rainfall fills the natural depressions between the dunes, creating a constantly changing landscape of lagoons. The result is extraordinary.

From above, the dunes appear almost sculpted, with sweeping curves broken by pools of intensely coloured water. During the wetter months, the lagoons can become large enough for swimming, making the experience even more remarkable. It is remote, spectacular and still relatively unfamiliar to international travellers. And perhaps that is part of its appeal.
